All is set for the inaugural 'Students Homecoming x Hiphop Festival' that is expected to take place on the 10th of December at Alexandra Sports Club in Harare.
The unique festival is the result of a partnership between non-profit organisation, Campus Culture and record label, Young Games Entertainment.
According to Diana Sakupwanya, one of the event co-ordinators, the first edition of the Students Homecoming X Hiphop Festival (SHHF) is a deejay event with 'intermittent' performances from local hiphop artists and/or rappers.
The headlining acts for the show include Mc Chita, Trae Yung, Scrip Mula, Takura, Ti Gonzi (of the hipu hopu yekuGhetto fame), urban grooves stalwarts, Ex Q and Stunner among others, the majority of whom are nominees for the Zim Hiphop Awards 2016.
"This is an initiative that is meant to support local hip-hop and bring local entertainment that is best suited to 'millennials' and 'gen next'. Local Hiphop is a genre that has great potential to be embraced and recognised in this community.
"Our line up of artists is just the tip of the ice burg. We have got the most popular and respected musicians in the industry, including the deejays as well. There are brilliant artists out there who we feel need a platform to express their art and unravel their talent. That is what we are here to provide and support", said Sakupwanya.
SHHF targets mainly the 14 –25 year age group, a generation that is typically social media oriented and keep themselves up to date with global fashion and music trends. It is from this age group that the event organizers expect to rake in attendee figures in excess of 5000 for the inaugural edition of SHHF!
One of SHHF's key objectives is to create a loyal and reliable fan base by offering good service, security and memorable experiences. It is their belief that this will help in creating a sustainable brand for the event and improving its positioning in the minds of their followers.
"The event caters for and was planned with young people in mind. I am sure that Hiphop/Rap/Trap music lovers will come to appreciate and embrace this event"
"There is going to be a lot of activities on the day, merchandise and plenty of discounts. We want to encourage our audience to interact , make friends and most important of all, have fun", said the event coordinator.
Sakupwanya put to rest any suggestion or fear that the event might be a once-off phenomenon.
"As soon as we are done with this show, preparations for the next SHHF will commence. Our partners and sponsors are committed to supporting the next edition of this Festival", she said.
Campus Culture has previously hosted events such as Campus Shut down 2014, Campus Culture Carnival 2015 and Mega Sports Extra Games (UZ) 2015 among others.Young Gamez Entertainment on the other hand is one of Zimbabwe’s fastest growing record labels and is responsible for quite a number of hits locally, chief among them being the Couples Delight and Lake July Riddims. They have worked with many high profile artists in Zimbabwe from the likes of Ammara Brown to Winky D, to mention a few.
