INSIGHT ON DROCOLE: A RISING HIP HOP ARTIST FROM THE BUSHES

DroCole a hip hop artist from Juliasdale, a small resort town in Nyanga, Zimbabwe . He was born on January 6, 1996 at Concession hospital, Concession, Zimbabwe.

DroCole started his musical journey in 2011 as a ghost writer. In 2013 he recorded his first single track, however due to financial constraints and the fact that he was still schooling he failed to balance his obligations and would later that same year decide to pursue music full time. DroCole attended Ellis Robins Boys’ High in Mabelreign, Harare to acquire his secondary education.

The rapper gained his inspirational waves and confidence from the complimentary views that were glued to his musical works. People would pass positive remarks such as "you killed it” after listening to his music, particularly due to his energetic and aggressive style of delivery so he began calling himself the “archetype deadly rapper.” He was convinced that no one out there sounded like him. DroCole has released a chain of singles, worked with a number of fellow upcoming artists and producers like Fun. F, Quazor, Tha Kanivore, Splits Loui and C. Bleech from Mutare. He is currently working on his first long-play project, a mixtape titled “Gutta Plan.” Building up to the release of his mixtape, on September 8, 2017 he did a double drop, releasing a hot banger “Pound Sterling,” where he showcased a catchy flow with an attitude, filled with playful chants and the hard-hitting track, “A Milli” where he outlined his intentions and ambitions as a rapper.

DroCole’s music effortlessly stands out, not only because of his unique voice but his execution to the subject matters he addresses, to his choice of words and his rebel flow is just unprecedented. DroCole has a rare and unfabricated story to share with the world.

Currently the rapper is polishing up his upcoming mixtape, “Gutta Plan,” which is set to be released within the next 2 months. The rapper when interviewed he said that the first official single of his mixtape named "Born to Reign" will be dropping even sooner as he is anticipating joy that will be contagious in the musical arena.

WHY ARTISTS SHOULD WORK TOGETHER IN 2018

by DroCole

If you are a rapper, a singer or even a record producer in the music industry today, you must well know that collaborations with fellow artists are undoubtedly essential should one wish to grow big and learn from others. So here are some of the reasons why artists come together to collaborate.

They want to grow their fan base. If you make a song with another artist, you're going to be exposed to their fans and if their fans like your style they might become fans too. This goes both ways like a kitchen door!
The second reason is that artists want to build connections because in this industry one just cannot do it on their own. In this game connections are everything. You have to know someone who knows someone important that you don't know. That's how you get plugged in!
Another reason is to learn from each other and to create something dope and different. Don't feature someone on your track simply because you have gone blank and just need a verse to fill up your track. Collaborate with somebody whose style effortlessly compliment your original sound or at least the sound you wish to produce on a particular project.
Collaborations with others will probably bring out the best in you, especially in a genre like Hip-hop, you want to make sure you go hard. You don't wanna be nobody's b*tch. You know how the game go!
So basically musicians collaborate to further their audience reach and for old cats, it's probably to prolong their relevance. Nowadays I doubt it's ever about the need to create awesome music or respect for the other artist's work anymore. It's mostly about business; the money, which is why your features need to be strategic.
Please don't waste time and energy and perhaps your money working with somebody who isn't good enough. This ruins your whole image and just slows you down and you just can't afford that. You're on a mission, right? If you're serious about your craft and if you ever ponder about where you wanna take your music, you're going to try and act in a professional manner and that includes working with like-minded people. Work with somebody who takes you one step ahead. It doesn't matter how big or small their fan base might be. Quality over quantity is eternally respected.
Lastly make sure that when you collaborate with someone they also push the music you make together as they would their own. Remember what matters is that good music and that it reaches the right people for significant progress to be realized. Point being, pay attention to who you work with and work hard. Surround yourself with people that build you and learn to work with others in humble manner. Maintain a teachable posture, that's how you learn.
Till next time, work on that fam. Let's make great music and make money from it in 2018!

'Operation Restore Regasi' comes to Theatre in The Park

article by tawanda ngena
Looking at the events of last November, you have to admire Zimbabweans for their fortitude, not only that, but their great sense of humour as well!
After all that tension, some 'comic relief' is definitely what any good doctor would have prescribed! In this case it comes in the form of a brand new theatre production titled 'Restore Regasi', a satitical look at those same events of November 15 where Zimbabwe witnessed a political upheaval like no other.

So if you are keen to relive such an historic chapter in our history, well, at least the funnier version of it, then find your way to the Theatre in The Park arena in the capital this March 28th, 29th and 30th. You definitely won't be disappointed!

Written by Charles Munganasa, a Theatre Arts graduate from the University of Zimbabwe, the comedy, 'Restore Regasi' is sure to leave a few ribs cracked just from the laughter alone!
"I decided to use comedy because I felt that it was the best way people could reflect on past events without attaching too many feelings. At the end of the day we should all be able to look back and laugh at history whilst we shape the future", said Munganasa.

"For us, this is called documentary theatre, whereby we capture and stage historical events for the benefit of our people and future generations. For example, when the real 'Operation Restore legacy' took place, people where terrified and confused and did not know what would happen next but now as we restage the whole event, people can afford to sit back, relax and eat popcorn whilst laughing their lungs out.
"I was inspired by the need to document such an historical event and to be able to tell it to the whole world through my own voice and language as a writer", he added.

Entertaining as it promises to be, this is one theatre production that didn't come cheap! Charles confirmed as much and also took the opportunity to call upon potential sponsors to help make sure that the play reaches all four corners of our great nation.
"The future of this play depends on sponsorship. It is an expensive production which comes with a crew of ten people and a full set which is constructed on stage together with Presidential properties. as such it is difficult moving people from one city to another.
"The Harare show alone has cost us close to US$1500 and we not certain if the gate takings will be able to cover the costs and also cover costs related to the next show probably in Bulawayo. This is a great play which should be watched by every Zimbabwean and those beyond our borders hence I call upon sponsors and promoters to chip in and help this play to reach its fullest potential", said Charles.

Even though DVD sales would help alleviate some of the costs, Charles reckons however that it will be a while before DVDs of the play are made available on the market since there's still a long way to go in as far as touring with the play.
"Only after all tbe tours. So expect them around december or even 2 years from now depending on how people will receive it....but judging from how it was received in Masvingo, I can safely say we still have a lot of places to go", said Munganasa.

ABOUT THE WRITER
Charles is a two time nama nominee for best Director and best Script writer. He has written plays such as The Graduates, Ananias and Sapphire and Chronicles of the Rainbow Nation

He turned down an offer to study law and opted for theatre because it has always been his passion since childhood.
Charles is also a film producer whose works such as Dreamers Reality TV show and Seiko (Nama Award winning short film) have been broadcast on ZTV.

The filmmaker also works with the Great Zimbabwe University performing arts department as a consulted in film and theatre.

synopsis
As the political tension rises in Zimbabwe following the dismisal of Emmerson Mnangagwa as Vice President of the country, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces through its commander, General Constantino Guvheya Chiwenga warns politicians in the ruling party particularly its leadership to stop the current purging of members with a liberation war background and also to stop reckless utterences directed at the military.
This does not go down well with Grace Mugabe who decides to sent Kudzai Chipanga (Youth Wing leader) to read a press statement further denigrating the military. The red line had been crossed and military tankers move into the streets as the situation in the country has moved to another level!
With the President under close monitoring by the military, the police completely disarmed and the state broadcaster under supervision; all that was left was for the people to express their will and as such they throng the streets in their thousands to call for the President to step down. It is such an historic moment as both the people and the army are on the same side, much to the shock and disappointment of the first family. However as stubborn as ever the President refuses to step down, instead he reminds the nation that there is still a lot of work to be done before he repeats his now infamous line,  "Asante Sana, Good night", during a press conference where everyone expects him to step down.

However as the pressure continues to mount and as the President's loyalists leave him in the cold, refusing to attend his cabinet meeting but instead opting to participate in his impeachment process in parliament. The writing was clear on the wall and after 37 years the President finally resigns.

Black Panther: The Album’

The soundtrack album is more distinct package which usually feels like an attempt made by the recording label to put their artist on. The film Black Panther appeals to Kendrick Lamar rapping in the voice of the superhero’s alter ego. The superhero movie was directed by Ryan Coogler and screenwriter Joe Robert Cole, starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and Lupita Nyong’o putting blackness to the latter.
The Black Panther sound track is a pleasant experience from the beginning till end. This is due to the various artists featured bringing spirit to the name Black Panther. The beats are relevant and enjoyable to listen to, making the soundtrack a great standalone album.
Kendrick Lamar being the touter for the films soundtrack gives the album a top rate over others. With various stars rolling through the end credits make the record sound majestic.
The albums soundtrack-adjacent realities at play with echoing dusky pianos and dramatized plots widens the scope where most of us actually have to live.
The Top Dawg Entertainment president Anthony pulled all the hip hop sounds from all over to provide the Wakanda sound. TDE has also brought R&B star Jorja Smith and Khalid who appear at the 14track of the album. With the soundtrack and the film production is has speculated the rise of music royalty.
West Compton rappers such as 2 Chainz, Future, Vince Staples and Anderson, Calif Mozzy and crew SOB x RBE are in the mix bringing taste of west side authenticity.
The albums soundtrack sidesteps expectation, experimentation and ideas for more generic and pop-friendly vibes with latest hits release. With the albums closing tag teamer “Pray for me” with Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd is a watering reanimation of the Tesfayes solo work.
By scanning 50 minutes of black music across the Three continents; rap, R&B, Afro-soul from South Africa, through California, Texas, Toronto and London, the album has sampled the films broader version of black excellence.

Anita Kubie Stepping Forward in Faith

For Anita Dawn Chantelle Kubie, "there are two choices in life, you either step forward in faith as in power or you step backwards into fear"

She conqured her own fears and by so doing, went a long way in proving that sometimes overcoming those debilitating fears is a sure step towards greatness! Her modelling career bares testament to that!
Kubie has been a professional model for well over 16 years now and has taken home many a crown, graced a lot of runways, magazines, videos, photoshoots and has also been brand ambassador to quite a number of products/companies, among those being Carex.
Currently signed under 106 Agency in Harare, the model, who also happens to be an Executive Personnel Assistant and mother of 2 described modelling as her life and passion.
"I was actually 14 years old when I started modellling, having been inspired by my aunty who was a professional model at the time. It is safe to say that it has virtually been my life since then and what a wonderful journey it has been!", said Anita.

The Bulawayo-born but Harare-based model has strutted her stuff on runway shows such as The Matabeleland Fashion Week, Top Model Fashion Week and Latin lingerie to mention but a few and put herself on the map with peagents like Miss Bulawayo, Miss legacy Zimbabwe 2017 (1st princess), Miss Valentine's Zimbabwe 2018 (Queen).
We asked Kubie, which one of these she holds dearest,
"That would be Miss Bulawayo (2004), which so happened to be my very first crowning. I was only 14 at the time but I took home the crown.
"Its most special to me because I remember one of the questions I was asked being, 'What is your greatest fear?' and my response was 'WINNING', of course!", she said.

Looking at her accomplishments alone, one would be tempted to think that if there ever was a secret to modelling, she would have at least an idea about it.
"The secret in modeling is not being perfect. What one needs is a face that people can define in a second. You have to be given whats needed by God as nature and to bring something new.
"You have to start dreaming before you can achieve anything. I have dreamt and achieved! People convince themselves that they will have time for their dreams in the future but there is never a better time than the present", said Kubie.

Apart from modelling, Anita is heavily involved in a number of charitable causes that seek to make a positive change in the lives of those who are less-fortunate.
"I am an ambassador for Xeroderma Pigmentosum kids who suffer from cancer.
"Besides that I also would want to open a community center for the underprivileged, especially the street kids. Setting up a food center to feed those who live in the street is a good place to start so I am currently sourcing for donations for both of these initiatives", she said.

There's a famous quote that says, all we can ever be and should strive for, is to be better versions of our own selves (or something along those lines) and the stunning model agrees.
"I just want to be the best version of Me that I can be. I also want to be in a position to give back to my own community in any way that I can.
"Having the power of social media does I think, just looking at how many people care about you and how many people like, want to watch what you are doing, it makes you really want to do the best you can do", said Anita Kubie.

Gemma Griffiths: Growing from Strength to Strength

Her rendition of local dancehall guru, Winky D's hit single "Musarova Bigman' virtually changed her fortunes over night. It cast her into the limelight and brought to the attention of the nation at large a very beautiful and talented young woman.

It's only natural that a lot of music lovers were left wondering just who this gem of a talent that had been unearthed, was and where she had emanated from. Today we will afford our readers the chance to have a few of those questions answered!

Over the years she has been a feature at festivals such as Hifa (Harare International Festival of Arts), ZimFest (London 2015) and 'Miombo Magic' among others where she left many awestruck. Yet, this is only but the 'tip of the iceberg' when it comes to her countless list of achievements in music, a list that also includes winning the national Eistedfodd Vocal Cup in Zimbabwe, a sure sign and true testament to her immense talent.

Not only is she gifted vocally but the singer also plays trumpet and piano, in which she was classically trained, as well as guitar.

Urban Craft magazine recently had a brief but insightful chat with the sensational Indie/folk singer/songwriter from her base in South Africa. She gave us a glimpse into a young yet colourful career and also took the opportunity to exclusively reveal that a much anticipated debut EP was also in the offing.

Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you.......Gemma Griffiths!!

> Can you give us a brief background into yourself?

Gemma: I was born in Cape Town, South Africa, but grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe. I am an acoustic soul singer and composer and also a pianist, trumpeter and guitarist through studying commercial music in the USA. I've aways had a very strong pull to music, and Zimbabwe's music scene feels like a part of me... Full of incredibe rhythm, sounds, people and experiences. I've been lucky enough to perform at a variety of music and arts festivals around the world, including the Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA) and Miombo Magic in Zimbabwe. I headlined for Zimfest London 2015, and performed at the African Womens Awards 2015. In 2016 I performed at the Zimbabwean achievers awards in London UK, and then played at Zimstock, Shoko, Zimlive and the Unplugged festivals in Zimbabwe later that year.

I am now based in Cape Town, which is an amazing City for music, and have been blessed to share the stage with a list of local artists such as Jimmy Nevis, Majozi and Matthew Mole. I also opened the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts for one of Zimbabwes top artists Jah Prayzah.

In 2016 I was nominated for a Zimbabwe Achievers Award for Music Artist of the Year and featured on the Mahogany Sessions in the UK, as well as Sofar Sounds London 2017. I recently opened for Grammy Award winning UK artist Joss Stone as part of Stones World Tour, and performed with Zimbabwean legend Oliver Mutukudzi at the Artscape in Cape Town... undoubtedly one of the highlighs of not only my musical career, but my life.

I've done a few English/Shona interpretations, including Winky Ds Musarova Bigman in 2016 which was a wonderful experience and has been received incredibly well.. I've really been in awe of the way it's been taken and the stunning feedback I've got from Zimbabweans all over the globe - it's been an amazingly uplifting experience. In terms of collaborations with international artists I've done a few, including Swiss DJ Askery on Headlights which was signed to Spinnin Records in the USA, and Game of Love with Cape Towns 'The Kiffness' in 2017.

> Would you mind sharing with us details to any of your current or upcoming projects that fans can look forward to?

Gemma: I am about to release my Debut EP (April 2018) as well as working on a few really exciting collaborations with some incredible artists!

> What would you say was your career defining moment?

Gemma: There have been a few incredible moments, including sharing the stage with Tuku, and performing at the Zimbabwe Achiever's Awards in London, but I'd have to say my Winky D - Musarova Bigman interpretation was definitely a defining moment and a big highlight for me as an artist.

> What does your music catalogue look like thus far?

Gemma: As I mentioned earlier, I've done a few collaborations with international artists, as well as some interpretations of some Zimbabwean songs. With the EP almost out, that will be the next addition to the catalogue.

> Can you share with us some of the major highlights in your career thus far?

Gemma: Sharing the stage with different artists has always been a highlight for me. With Tuku in Cape Town, and Jah Prayzah at Kirstenbosch, as well as with the lovely Ammara Brown and Chengeto Brown in Zimbabwe, on Andy Brown's 'Mapurisa' - this was completely spontaneous and a real moment of sharing the music in such a beautiful way.

> What have you set your sights on for 2018 and beyond that?

Gemma: 2018 is going to be an incredibly exciting year - With the EP and collaborations in the works, some travel and shows around the globe... there is a lot to look forward to.

HipHop Open Mic at The Goose Bar & Grill (Avonlea)

PRESS RELEASE

"An underground gateway to the mainstream"

They say all great things start small and the HipHop Open Mic at The Goose Bar and Grill which was launched a few weeks ago is fast gaining momentum. Judging from the response by the participants and the attendance its clear that its going to take more than a bullet to stop this show.

This hip hop open mic gig is a community initiative but its catchment area is reaching far and wide thanks to the organisers who include The Goose Bar and Grill management, Urban Craft Magazine, Mic Music and local hip hop artists and fans.

The main concept behind the open mic gig is the creation of a platform conducive for the interaction of hip hop artists (both established and aspiring), and fans while also bringing hip hop to the people. We also believe that for anything to be successful it must first gain popularity within its grassroots. Hiphop has been sidelined for sometime and this is partly because for some reason promoters favour other genres over hip hop. People are also fast forgetting that there is always some big activity happening on the underground.

Our main aim is to bring back hip hop culture back to the scene as was the case in the 90s. Now is the time to showcase the impact hip hop can have locally as we have more artists taking up the genre than in the 90s.
Hip hop will always have a part to play in the lives of the youths and everyone in general. It is vital to know what hip hop stands for and that is awareness and relevance. A lot of artists may try to further define hip hop in their own way but awareness and relevance remain its two main pillars as defined by the genre's earliest and finest artists.

What the audience can expect is performance by hip hop artists and they can get to witness the talent harboured in surrounding areas like but not limited to Avonlea, Avondale, Greencroft, Mabelreign, Marlborough and Westgate. Acts will include live performances, free styling and rap battles.
Let me be quick to explain what a rap battle is to those who are not in the know. A rap battle is where two participants try to outdo each other. The purpose of this is not to settle scores or create enmity as what will be traded there are mainly metaphors.   The purpose of rap battles is to show case one's intellect, vocabulary and her or his way with words among other skills and traits that make up a hip hop artists.

We are making plans that will see us awarding prizes to the best performers of the week, among other incentives.
We would also like to make it abundantly clear that our doors are open to everyone with hiphop at heart, from the hiphopheads, producers, managers, the media, the artists themselves and the corporate world as well.
Our chief goal is and will always be to play a part in the growth of hiphop and making sure that the culture is not lost!

We hope to see you next week. Join us in celebrating hiphop @ The Goose Bar this and EVERY sunday!
