Modelling Opens Up New Horizons for Carol

"Modelling is something that my heart beats for, it is something that I made up my mind about when I had my first photo shoot at Photophactory studio , the pictures gave me an insight into what life in the limelight could be like.
"Being the daughter of a fashion designer who has a great taste in fashion, the passion for competing in pageants and being on the runway all pointed me towards a career in modeling.
"I am living my dream right now and despite challenges that I face, I'm grateful for the good moments", said Caroline Chenai Mhonda, an emerging model currently signed under Choice Cuts Modelling agency

For the 22 year old stunning beauty, modelling gave her the motivation she needs to keep herself fit and make sure she is properly groomed while at the same time widening her scope in as far as fashion is concerned.
"I have what some would term a 'portable'/tiny body that is always in shape. I exercise twice a week and I take healthy meals always and I would also like to believe that I have a great taste in fashion.
"Modelling motivates one to look good and groom's one in terms of dressing and  fashion taste", she said.

Locally, in the modelling industry, there's definitely no shortage of success stories and inspirational individuals who have paved the way for generations to come and as such, it has made it easier for aspiring models like Carol to follow in those footsteps.
"I look up to the likes of Nyasha Matonhodze in the industry, she has raised the bar high, created her own powerful brand which naturally led to her being signed under some of the most powerful designers on the modelling scene.
"I would love the opportunity to have some grooming lessons from her one day", said Mhonda.

Being a strong believer in her own talents, the aspring model said that she is someone who is willing to learn but more importantly someone who is looking to build a brand that can be globally recognized.
"My aim is to network as much as possible with stakeholders in the industry, to make the rest of the world appreciate local talent (both models and designers) especially from the grassroots level.
"I am looking forward to engaging in a lot of projects and though It's still work in progress, I plan to advertise local designers talent through fashion modelling and also to participate in local pageants myself.
"l am somebody who really wants to learn more from the industry, somebody who wants to build a brand as well as raising the flag of Choice Cuts Modeling Agency. I am a strong believer in myself and I feel nothing is impossible if you work hard enough and dedicate all you do to Christ", said Carol, as she is fondly referred to by her family and friends.

Besides modelling, the beauty is also just as passionate about dance and fashion. She is in the process of putting together her own fashion label.
"I see myself as a natural entreprenuer. I am a dancer who is very much looking forward to joining Jibillika dance group where I see myself flourishing. I'm also working with a fashion designer on my own fashion label", she said.

It is no secret that having a supportive family is a good foundation if one is to pursue anything. Carol concurs, as in her own case it made it easier for her to chase down her dreams.
"I remember how whenever my mum designed something for me, she would always say 'this looks perfect on you my beauty queen' and it is those moments that I always go back to in my own mind to remind myself about how and where it all started but more importantly just how much this means to me.
"The people around me made it easy for my dream to come true and special mention goes to Mrs N Mhonda, Mrs M Mutero, Magwenya Lorraine, Madyira mellisa, Pfidze Allan and Photophactory", said the 22-year old.

'Official Welcome to Choice Cuts Modelling agency' ceremony on this Saturday

This Saturday Choice Cuts Modelling agency will be hosting an 'Official Welcome' ceremony for its newly-registered models at the Crown Plaza hotel in the capital city, Harare.
"The event is targeted at the models that have just registered with us and those that are willing to do so, including a few individuals, those that might want to be introduced to Choice Cuts and know more about us", said Datafae, Choice Cuts' representative.

The purpose of the meeting, according to Datafae, was to introduce the newly-registered models to the Choice Cuts administration and also what is expected of them from hereon as members.
"Our main agenda is to do an official welcome for the newly registered Choice Cuts models and at the same time introduce them to the Administration.
"This meeting will also serve as a platform and opportunity for us to be telling them what they are supposed to do and what they are not supposed to do as well as our obligations pertaining to their work, the roles we are going to play and what we are going to require of them", he said.

With the models having done their part, so-to-speak, and entrusted their careers in the hands of the agency, Saturday's ceremony presents Choice Cuts with the chance to prove to the models and everyone else that their trust has not misplaced.

"We are aiming to reach a point of agreement with our models and letting them know that the decision that they have taken of placing their careers into our hands actually means that they have taken a huge step and with their cooperation we are going to make them into who they want to be", added Datafae.

The Choice Cuts representative however sought to make it clear that the official welcome meeting did not by any means signal that the registration process was done.
"The registration is still in progress, for those that want to be part of us they can still approach us or come to this meeting.
"As of now, we can safely say that the exercise has been successful because we have registered quite a considerable number and though we havent reached our limit of the models that we need, the number of models that we have now is appropriate for us to start our work", said Datafae.

Looking to the future, Datafae said that after Saturday's meeting was when the real work began and that it was a long road ahead but one that was necessary.
"After Saturday, this is when the actual work begins. By next week the calender of our events will be published and the models will already be on their duties", he said.

REVIEW: “The Fate Of The Furious” Is An Outrageous Thrill Ride

You already know what to expect, if you have seen the Fast and the Furious series. And yet, somehow, some way, “The Fate of the Furious” manages to take the
exciting madness beyond the already insane norm.
It has too be noted: Fast and the Furious is one of the most successful movie series ever and has grossed almost $4 billion. Furthermore, it has survived and endured a number of changes and metamorphoses, most notably the tragic death of actor Paul Walker. It also must be noted that the key to the additive nature of the series is that each movie one-ups the previous. The Fate of the Furious is no different. It started off so peaceful and demure.

At the movie’s onset, Dominic (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are happily married and on their honeymoon in Cuba when their attempt at a normal life is almost immediately thwarted. An infamous cyber terrorist named Cipher (Charlize Theron) twists Dom’s arm so badly, she makes him betray his whole crew. Even Letty is baffled at his behavior. Now, the crew must unite to bring home the man who made them a family and stop Cipher from unleashing chaos on a world scale.
Grand scale is an understatement in this one (as with most Fast And Furious flicks), so put your brain on hold and enjoy the ride of rides.

DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), hackers Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Tej (Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges), goofball Roman (Tyrese Gibson), government boss Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) and his new jack protegee (Scott Eastwood) are challenged with the daunting task of getting Dom and destroying Cipher’s diabolical plot. There are a number of twists and turns, including the return of Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), who was the villain in the last of the Fast and The Furious movie.
Listen. “Fast & Furious 8” is a wild, ostentatious ride that won’t likely win any new fans. But, that is not the goal. The goal is to super serve the existing audience and give them all they expect from the franchise. There are There are some incredible moments, like a particularly scary scene in New York City, and then the absurdity of the crew racing a submarine in the arctic while stopping a nuclear warhead from being unleashed on the world. Sheer insanity. However, the movie is entertaining and fun and funny. On top of the fun, there are some genuinely touching, cute moments as well. No spoilers. Enjoy. Escape. Fate of the Furious entertains absolutely, without mercy

Onward!

Thabile Veronica Nkosi puts Her Beauty and Brains to Work

"I want to be able to show the world that you do not need to be hired for a job to make money but you can be your own boss using what talent or skill that you already possess, in my case, I am making use of my beauty and brains", says the gorgeous Thabile Veronica Nkosi, one of the entrants in the upcoming Miss SA Township peagent.

She is indeed a unique combination of both beauty and brains, that is without a doubt and the model seems to have her sights firmly set on taking the crown back home to her own 'township' of Mpumalanga.

We sat down with the lovely Thabile for a brief chat in which she gave us an insight into her modelling career, her family and most important of all, her hopes and aspirations. Below is how it all went down.

You recently entered the Miss SA township pagent, what preparations have you put in place in order for you to advance in this competition?

Thabile: As a township girl I believe putting the community before myself is an important thing because I am who I am today because of the community and any negativity or positivity that has come my way has built me up to be a better person. I am currently involved in many projects that are to help the community more especially the young girls. In simpler terms, I just want to involve the community in all that I am doing because this pageant in my own understand is about someone who can put the community before herself and be an inspiration to those around her and show them that everything is possible if you put your mind to it.

What do you think your chances of making it to the podium in the Miss SA Township pagent are?

Thabile: Receiving the great news that I was entering into the top 30 finalist as a public choice has really showed me that i had the support of the community and yes, I believe I have every chance of making it to the podium in this pageant!

It is not because of my beauty alone that I say this but also because of the love I have for my township that creates better chances for me. The support from my family and friends and still seeing the likes and shares of my pictures on the Miss SA township page reminds me that the community is behind me 100% and that makes me want to do my best and bring that crown back home with me.

In as far as the modelling, can you share with us some of your earliest memories?

Thabile: As a young girl, while i was still in primary school in fact, I entered into 2 pageants where i was crowed queen (Miss Nhlazatshe Summer). Back then modeling was just done for fun and very few of us understood the concept behind it.

When and where did your journey in the modelling business start?

Thabile: Growing up i was surrounded by people who couldn't understand my walk, I call it the "Natural Model walk" and because of the way I walked, people used to say "ngiyazitjela" (i am full of myself). I just believed in myself and that one day i would be crowned 'miss something' because of that same walk.

What is it that drew you towards pursuing a career in modelling?

Thabile: Finding a job is hard and most of the times people do jobs that they do not really like but because we grew up knowing that we need to work and we need to make money so people will do just about anything to fulfil the two aspects. Growing up with the saying: "Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life" was what really brought me close to modeling. I believe that i will one day be able to pay my own fees and finish my degree (a BA in Public Management and Governance at the University of Johannesburg) and continue doing what I love.

Who were some of your role models growing up and why?

Thabile: My mother has always and will forever be my role model. She was such a calm person, eager to help everyone around her. She was a prayer warrior and everyone around her looked up to her. My father is also my role model because not every man wants to be part of his kids' lives after a mother dies and the fact that he still treats the first born as his own that gives me greater strength to want to be like him and have the love for people like he does. There's four of us, his biological children but he takes care of more than ten and our neighbours as well. He has a heart of GOLD and he is a praying father, I would be nothing without him and for that he is my role model

Besides the Miss SA township pagent, what else have you set your sights on for 2017?

Thabile: I want to finish my degree. I also want to groom other young kids who might want to pursue a modeling career. I want to help the youth create their own jobs with the help of our community council. As an individual I would want to see myself on the runway showcasing designer clothes and making a name for myself and MAYBE you might see me on the Miss SA pageant in future.

Can you share with us some of your aspirations?

Thabile: I want to fight poverty through my modeling career, create projects that will open jobs for people and promote education as it is a very important key to anyone's success.

Any memorable moments/highlights in your career thus far?

Thabile: Getting to meet people during a few video shoots, being part of the Voodoo photography team #LightsCameraAction and having the chance to interact with people via social media as part of my application for Miss SA Township are some of my fondest memories thus far.

Doc Vikela kicks off 'Intensive Care' National Standup tour

Zimbabwe's standup comedy scene has gained significant ground, especially in the last couple of years.
Appreciation for standup comedy has also grown locally.
Everyday we see veterans and the 'new blood' battle it out to see who can crack the most ribs with laughter, so-to-speak and we have had the priviledge to witness before our eyes, the emergence of the likes of Carl Ncube, Clive Chigubhu, Simba The Comic King and of course, Doc Vikela, the man who is seen as the next big thing and upon whose shoulders (and jokes) the industry will stand.

A few days ago, whilst browsing through the entertainment pages, we bumped into a poster for Doc Vikela's 'Intensive Care' National tour, a poster in which like a true 'doctor' he appears with a white overcoat and a stethoscope around his neck, as if ready to diagnose his patient. In this mockup scenario, the doctor's 'prescription' would no doubt be a strong dosage of laughter, after all, don't they say that 'laughter is the best medicine'?

So brace yourself Zimbabwe, Doc Vikela is 'amped up' and is bringing his 'Intensive Care' National Standup tour to a city near you!
So whether you are in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru,Masvingo, Kwekwe, Mutare or Vic Falls, make a date with the 'doctor'!
We caught up with the comedian for a brief chat to find out more about his upcoming tour and also get him to share his thoughts on a few other issues.
Below is how our chat with the 'comedy doctor' went;

Can you give us a background into the "Intensive Care", National standup tour?
The nation is in a fix, in an Intensive Care unit, so as a comedy doctor i am going all out to provide a cure!

Who is the Brains behind it and when was it established?
It is my concept, a celebration of the growth of the brand Doc Vikela and Zim stand up comedy industry. It is a touring concept that i created this year for my tour

When does the tour officially kick-off?
The tour kicks off on the 24th with a Harare performance

Who are some of the acts (established and upcoming) that will grace the tour?
We will be having Kadem the comic, comic pastor, gonyeti and Tinaye

What is your main goal with this initiative?
Our main goal is to grow stand up comedy as well as reach out to new audiences. Open new markets and if possible establish regular comedy spots around the country

What can the folks from Masvingo and other cities expect when the Intensive Care National Standup tour makes a stopover in their city?
They can expect fireworks, crazy crazy crazy humour, Doc Vikela amplified!

What is your take on the local standup comedy scene right now?
The stand up comedy scene is still growing. And this tour among other initiatives moves to cement growth of the industry!

In which areas do you feel it can improve for the better?
Areas of promotion, opening up new performance spaces, new markets

For the benefit of those not yet familiar with you or your work can you tell us more about just who Doc Vikela is?
Doc Vikela is an award winning stand up comedian who points out the absurdity of what is supposedly normal

One on One with the vivacious Vanessa Vee Deza

She is touted as one of the most promising Zimbabwean modelling 'exports' and rightly so, she continues raising the nation's flag high down in 'Mzansi'.
It is just as hard not to notice those sultry looks as it is not to notice her work, work that is recognized even back here at home and led being a nominee at the recently held Zimbabwe Models Awards.
Our writer, Peter Tanyanyiwa (PT) sat down with the vivacious South-African based model, Vanessa Vee Deza (VD) and below is how the interview went;

PT. What inspired you to take up modelling as a career?
VD. Well it was a number of people who encouraged me to try modelling, I wasn't too sure about it at first

PT. Take us through the emotions that you went through in your first ever fashion show and/or photo shoot?
VD. My first photo shoot I was super nervous but the photographer put me at ease, my first fashion show I was super confident and it was a success

PT. Who was your role model growing up and how did that help in shaping you into the model that you are today?
VD. Honestly I didn't have a role model in the modelling industry, if anything I never saw myself as a model, It never occurred to me that one day I could actually become a model

PT. Was your family supportive?
VD. My mother was super supportive and is still, but she always advises me to put education first, but to also follow my heart and passion

PT. What are your thoughts on the polarizing 'size 0' recquirement?
VD. Size 0 is an unfair requirement because it puts pressure on so many models, there are bigger models with so much potential but because of their size they are not looked at twice, but I'm glad that the South African modelling industry is now opening up to bigger models, even for runway and even plus size models are in demand, we just hope that this will continue on to Europe so that bigger sized models can be given an opportunity to realize their dreams through modelling

PT. If you were not a model, what else do you think you could have been?
VD. I always wanted to be a lawyer, but was hopeless in mathematics so instead I settled for Human Resources Management which is what I'm currently studying

PT. What are your 'guilty pleasures' food-wise?
VD. Where do I even begin? Let me put it this way, I eat everything and mostly what I'm not supposed to eat, I'm one of the lucky few who don't gain weight

PT. How do you cope with the pressures of being a model?
VD. I cope very well because all I have to do is maintain my weight and take good care of my skin, which at first was a little difficult because I'd forget these things but now it's like part of my life so I just do it easily. I guess the pressure is when I go for castings and have to compete with other models to get a part

PT. What beauty tips do you swear by?
VD. water water water, smooth clear skin all year round, but of course scrub it once or twice a week

PT. Any advice for aspiring models out there?

VD. If one wants to join an agency they need to do thorough research on that agency, make sure it's legit, because there are so many bogus agencies that charge an arm and a leg for joining fee and test shoots but they don't give you any work at all ,not saying that you should always get work, sometimes you can even be in the agency for months but not get anything but other models in that agency should at least be working for you to know that one day you might get work, so it requires a whole lot of patience . Also make sure you fit all the requirements needed by the agency, such as height, features, weight.

NEW DRAMA SERIES GIVES FRESH TALENT CHANCE TO 'SHINE'

By tawanda ngena
A new television drama series is on the Horizon!
Produced by Loud 5 studios, owned by Michael Mushunje in collaboration with Just Imagine Pictures, owned by Tendayi Zonde (Prometheus) and aptly titled 'Shine FM', the drama series is set to do what very few other local television productions are doing right now.....giving a leading role to the next generation of stars and thereby also availing a platform for them to blossom (or shine, as it were!)

"It has always been my 'custom' to give "unknowns" a chance. I love working with fresh minds because I can not stand people who have a "diva" mentality. We already started shooting the first episode and it looks very promising.
"It made perfect sense to have young artists portray young artists. It's quite literally their story and I think that their own personal experiences will feed positively into their performance", said Prometheus, co-producer of Shine Fm.
With new and amazing upcoming talent from the likes of Shallom, Blacperl and lil Saynt, to mention a few, the series which is being shot in various locations in and around the capital city promises to be a feast for the eyes.

"Production for the series has already commenced and we should be finished by early April, after which, we look forward to it being commissioned on the national broadcaster.
""We are also looking at taking the pilot to as many networks as possible and try to secure the best deal for our young actors.
"We are shooting 13 episodes (season one) and depending on how it received by our television audiences, we will definitely be shooting a second season", he said.

According to Prometheus, the story to the drama series, 'Shine Fm' revolves around young artists who are trying to make it in the music industry and the challenges they face in the sunshine city.
"It is a story that I have seen up close in my interaction with young artists through the various youth shows I'm involved in at Zbc TV. So it is a story I feel needs to be told.
"The series also explores other themes such as romance, betrayal and self actualization, all of which I am sure today's youth can identify with", he said.

Asked how the series came about and whether we can look forward to a cameo from him, this is what he had to say,
"It was late last year that I was approached by Loud 5 Studios and got commissioned to write a screenplay for a TV series. Several weeks later the first draft for "SHINE FM" was ready.
"I might play a part if the right role presents itself but for now I am concentrating on the production aspect of it all".
Just Imagine Pictures has produced a number of TV projects before and besides the popular hip-hop show, ZIM RAP CITIES (whose first season was flighted on Zbc Tv for in 2015), the media company also did production work on the YGT VOICE-BOX and ZIM HIP-HOP REPORT CHRISTMAS CONCERTS for Zbc TV in 2016.
"Just Imagine Pictures is a production company I started with my wife in 2015. It actually started earlier by being a recording studio then evolved into  a TV production company as well.
"In our company, we believe that whatever we "imagine" can become a reality", said the 'hiphop driver', as he has become known over the last couple of years.
Prometheus reckons that the upcoming drama series will 'blow everyone away' and will keep them glued to their seats. Given his track record over the years and the number of successful projects he has put together, you surely would not bet against him!

IT ALL 'STEMS FROM THE HEART' FOR PAIDEMOYO

By Tawanda Ngena

Renowned fashion designer Paidemoyo Chideya Mazhandu believes that the Zimbabwean fashion industry has the potential to surpass expectations and can one day become a major player on the regional stage, if not an international one.
"Opportunity presents itself in many ways. We are being given an opportunity to rectify the problems that have been created by past generations and we are also being given a chance to develop the sector and and become a leading player in Africa and eventually in the world. Therefore, the onus is on us as fashion designers to grab this unique opportunity with both hands", she said.
Who can doubt that assertion, especially when it is coming from a Paris and New York trained designer who of course is owner of her own fashion label, DeMoyo, which she established in 2010 and is located in the leafy surburb of Avondale, Harare.
" The name 'DeMOYO' stems from Paidemoyo, my name and it also means 'from the heart'. All that I can say is that all creative works that come from me come from the Heart.
"Nothing beats knowing that I am being my best, yet still individual and that I am the brand ambassador within my work culture", said Paidemoyo.

DeMoyo's target market is metropolitan women and men aged between 25-40.
" We recognized a need in the market for a sophisticated and fabulous look when it comes to business attire. The need comes from the understanding that a corporate look should also define a personality, a feeling, a touch, a sense of style and above all else eloquence.
" Our goal is to connect to the grassroots of the corporate subculture and we have  embarked on the great mission of tackling corporate culture and identity through design, style and clothing", said Mazhandu.

Mazhandu spent more than a decade discovering what it meant to become not only the epitome of the classic, but an innovator in the fashion sense as well.
Now mature, and ready to leave a mark on the fashion industry with her own style, she has created a product line that she hopes encapsulates her vision of the fashion world.
"I have always been creative. I consider myself a creator first, an artist second and a designer third. I have been blessed enough to have real experience from some of the fashion world's top players.
"This subsequently led to me pursuing my own dream of creating a fashion empire. I have seen things that most people only dream of and it has been the most beautiful  experience of my life", she said.

Born in Zimbabwe, raised in Sweden, London and with a brief stint in Paris, Paidemoyo learned to refine her design eye through the diversity of all the multiplexes of cultures that surrounded her upbringing. Upon her New York City arrival, she worked some of the most iconic fashion houses, chief among them being Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, where she learnt to refine her eye for vintage, style, eloquence and demure.
"One of my most treasured moments was naturally the first show I ever saw live- Valentino in Paris and then walking down the runway at the end of my show in Toronto", said Paidemoyo.

In this industry, to survive you have to stay ahead of, not only the trends but the competition as well, we asked Paidemoyo how her own product line has managed to stay relevant.
"First and and foremost, our basic approach is to work on each individual client to ensure customers retention. The residual effect of this is that naturally by word of mouth people will hear about our service, finishing and expertise. Then secondly the garment itself speaks for itself.
"We make sure that everything we do is made to perfection. What is does is that it guarantees our product. Thirdly, all social media, online platforms, website, retail outlet platforms must be in top form. That's it in a nutshell", she said.

As to her plans for the future, the fashion designer said that one of her primary goals was to establish flagship stores across sub-saharan Africa in the next 5 years.

By Tawanda Ngena

She is a designer par excellence, not only beautiful but graceful in her demeanor as well.

We caught up with the Bulawayo born and bred fashion designer and she gave us an insight into her life and the fashion world.

Can you tell us more about who Nomathemba Ndlovu is?
I'm a lady aged 23 and I am the youngest in a family of four. I grew up in Pumula South in Bulawayo and I attended my high school at Premier high school.

What inspired you to take up a career in the fashion business?
The reason i took up a career in fashion designing is because I am very passionate about beauty and I have a creative eye. The industry is exciting, making dull days a rare occurrence and you get the chance to work with all types of clients, fellow designers and it is all quite an experience on its own.

Before i decided to chart my own path in this industry, I already had a background in fashion as i had previously worked at Klober fusion while putting myself through college in 2014 where I was studying marketing management. While at Klober fusion, I felt my life was literally passing me by. I could not take in the thought that I could possibly spend my entire career working for one company so I started designing, sewing and established my own brand from thereon.

Can you still recall what your very first design as a professional designer was?
My first ever design was a long maxi dress, of an African print material.

What is your take on the local fashion industry itself?
The local fashion industry has to put more effort in making nice and unique clothing and being incredibly competitive so as to attract many more customers which will go a long way in making our industry recognizable not just locally but on the international scene as well. With enough support I believe that our industry has the potential to go far.

What have been the highlights for you so far?
keeping up with the rapidly changing trends and satisfying the needs of a demanding audience have been the highlights of my career in the fashion business. With the trends ever-changing, fading in and out, it naturally keeps you on your toes.

As a designer, can you share with us some of your goals?
My goal as a fashion designer is to thrive and make designs that will trend all over the world and to Inspire the young generation of girls.

Any words of advice to aspiring fashion designers out there?
To the fashion designers out there, do what you are good at and everything else will always fall into place. Fashion is life, accept and embrace the fact that you are different, trust me, you will be irreplaceable!

Do you believe in the saying that 'do what you love and you never have to work a day in your life'? Does it apply to you?
I honestly do believe that if you put in more effort and establish a good work ethic when it comes to your dreams, when the fruits of your labor start trickling in none of it will ever feel like a job.
If you put all that you have in what you love then you will love and enjoy working everyday on what you love.

With all the countless designs that you put out, who exactly is your target market?
My designs mainly target young women and Men..

Your aspirations?
I intend to go far as much as I can regardless of any obstacles and by the will of God I have no doubt whatsoever that I will reach those dizzy heights!
