Miss UZ 2018 Title Up For Grabs

In just a matter of weeks, 14 lucky girls will battle it out to see who gets to take home the Miss UZ title and the organizers are promising a night like no other!
"Expect to be entertained! To the best of our abilities, we made it airtight. The interludes are by celebrities/entertainers and our models have received training from award winning choreographers. I could not be more proud.
"We are better prepared this time around and the quality of our service this year will be an improvement on every facet that you can think of", said organiser of the event, Hillary Rgwaringesu.

Not only will those in attendance get to feast their eyes on some of the finest beauties in the land do their thing on the ramp but there's also a mouth-watering artist roster that is sure to raise the roof on the 28th of April at the University of Zimbabwe's Great Hall when the peagent is set to take place!
"We have celebrity MCs/Socialites, among those being the affectionately known 'Kikky BadAss' who aslo happens to be an award winning rapper and DJ Towers, famous for his crowd prowess so I feel there wont be any dull moment there.
"As for our list of performers, we have household names like Ammara Brown, Silent Killer, Tehn Diamond, Junior Brown and well as Sanni Makhalima. It's a good blend and something that I feel cuts across the audience demographies", said Hillary.

Besides the crown and of course the bragging rights, the girls are set to walk away with some amazing prizes as well.
"There will definitely be cash prices for all 5 crowns. Miss U.Z and her two princesses walking away with the larger chunk and the rest going to Miss U.Z People's Choice as well as Miss Talent. There will also be holiday packages in the mix, dinner vouchers, modelling contracts, spa treatments and makeup hampers, the list goes on and on.
"So many sponsors have come on board and made sure we are able to provide our models with a wonderful experience", said Rgwaringesu.

That list of sponsors that Hillary mentions includes Xerox, Afrique Angel, Phoenix Media, Black Opal, Munch, Mambos, Brand Melutoni, Sterkinekor, Swig Photography, Four Star Photography, Parras Photography and Ladn Arts among others.

According to Rgwaringesu, the Miss University of Zimbabwe Beauty Pageant is an annual celebration of intellectual beauty run by the Rotaract club of the University of Zimbabwe for the exclusive benefit of charity.
The major benefeciaries for this year's event are the Pathways Autism Trust and Hupenyu Hutsva Children's home.

Anita Kubie Stepping Forward in Faith

For Anita Dawn Chantelle Kubie, "there are two choices in life, you either step forward in faith as in power or you step backwards into fear"

She conqured her own fears and by so doing, went a long way in proving that sometimes overcoming those debilitating fears is a sure step towards greatness! Her modelling career bares testament to that!
Kubie has been a professional model for well over 16 years now and has taken home many a crown, graced a lot of runways, magazines, videos, photoshoots and has also been brand ambassador to quite a number of products/companies, among those being Carex.
Currently signed under 106 Agency in Harare, the model, who also happens to be an Executive Personnel Assistant and mother of 2 described modelling as her life and passion.
"I was actually 14 years old when I started modellling, having been inspired by my aunty who was a professional model at the time. It is safe to say that it has virtually been my life since then and what a wonderful journey it has been!", said Anita.
 
The Bulawayo-born but Harare-based model has strutted her stuff on runway shows such as The Matabeleland Fashion Week, Top Model Fashion Week and Latin lingerie to mention but a few and put herself on the map with peagents like Miss Bulawayo, Miss legacy Zimbabwe 2017 (1st princess), Miss Valentine's Zimbabwe 2018 (Queen).
We asked Kubie, which one of these she holds dearest,
"That would be Miss Bulawayo (2004), which so happened to be my very first crowning. I was only 14 at the time but I took home the crown.
"It’s most special to me because I remember one of the questions I was asked being, 'What is your greatest fear?' and my response was 'WINNING', of course!", she said.

Looking at her accomplishments alone, one would be tempted to think that if there ever was a secret to modelling, she would have at least an idea about it.
"The secret in modeling is not being perfect. What one needs is a face that people can define in a second. You have to be given what’s needed by God as nature and to bring something new.
"You have to start dreaming before you can achieve anything. I have dreamt and achieved! People convince themselves that they will have time for their dreams in the future but there is never a better time than the present", said Kubie.

Apart from modelling, Anita is heavily involved in a number of charitable causes that seek to make a positive change in the lives of those who are less-fortunate.
"I am an ambassador for Xeroderma Pigmentosum kids who suffer from cancer.
"Besides that I also would want to open a community center for the underprivileged, especially the street kids. Setting up a food center to feed those who live in the street is a good place to start so I am currently sourcing for donations for both of these initiatives", she said.

There's a famous quote that says, all we can ever be and should strive for, is to be better versions of our own selves (or something along those lines) and the stunning model agrees.
"I just want to be the best version of Me that I can be. I also want to be in a position to give back to my own community in any way that I can.
"Having the power of social media does I think, just looking at how many people care about you and how many people like, want to watch what you are doing, it makes you really want to do the best you can do", said Anita Kubie.

Modelling Opens Up New Horizons for Carol

"Modelling is something that my heart beats for, it is something that I made up my mind about when I had my first photo shoot at Photophactory studio , the pictures gave me an insight into what life in the limelight could be like.
"Being the daughter of a fashion designer who has a great taste in fashion, the passion for competing in pageants and being on the runway all pointed me towards a career in modeling.
"I am living my dream right now and despite challenges that I face, I'm grateful for the good moments", said Caroline Chenai Mhonda, an emerging model currently signed under Choice Cuts Modelling agency

For the 22 year old stunning beauty, modelling gave her the motivation she needs to keep herself fit and make sure she is properly groomed while at the same time widening her scope in as far as fashion is concerned.
"I have what some would term a 'portable'/tiny body that is always in shape. I exercise twice a week and I take healthy meals always and I would also like to believe that I have a great taste in fashion.
"Modelling motivates one to look good and groom's one in terms of dressing and  fashion taste", she said.

Locally, in the modelling industry, there's definitely no shortage of success stories and inspirational individuals who have paved the way for generations to come and as such, it has made it easier for aspiring models like Carol to follow in those footsteps.
"I look up to the likes of Nyasha Matonhodze in the industry, she has raised the bar high, created her own powerful brand which naturally led to her being signed under some of the most powerful designers on the modelling scene.
"I would love the opportunity to have some grooming lessons from her one day", said Mhonda.

Being a strong believer in her own talents, the aspring model said that she is someone who is willing to learn but more importantly someone who is looking to build a brand that can be globally recognized.
"My aim is to network as much as possible with stakeholders in the industry, to make the rest of the world appreciate local talent (both models and designers) especially from the grassroots level.
"I am looking forward to engaging in a lot of projects and though It's still work in progress, I plan to advertise local designers talent through fashion modelling and also to participate in local pageants myself.
"l am somebody who really wants to learn more from the industry, somebody who wants to build a brand as well as raising the flag of Choice Cuts Modeling Agency. I am a strong believer in myself and I feel nothing is impossible if you work hard enough and dedicate all you do to Christ", said Carol, as she is fondly referred to by her family and friends.

Besides modelling, the beauty is also just as passionate about dance and fashion. She is in the process of putting together her own fashion label.
"I see myself as a natural entreprenuer. I am a dancer who is very much looking forward to joining Jibillika dance group where I see myself flourishing. I'm also working with a fashion designer on my own fashion label", she said.

It is no secret that having a supportive family is a good foundation if one is to pursue anything. Carol concurs, as in her own case it made it easier for her to chase down her dreams.
"I remember how whenever my mum designed something for me, she would always say 'this looks perfect on you my beauty queen' and it is those moments that I always go back to in my own mind to remind myself about how and where it all started but more importantly just how much this means to me.
"The people around me made it easy for my dream to come true and special mention goes to Mrs N Mhonda, Mrs M Mutero, Magwenya Lorraine, Madyira mellisa, Pfidze Allan and Photophactory", said the 22-year old.

Mutizira shares her passion for Modelling and Dance

Background
I am an upcoming model under choice cuts modeling agency and also taking dancing classes under jibilika as it has been my passion to be a dancer from a very tender age. Being in the modeling industry is a bit challenging and fun at the same time because of the competition and also many opportunities that comes our way.

Currently, I am a student at Midlands State Univesity doing Development Studies.
The glamour is mostly what attracted me to the world of fashion and modelling, it has been quite an experience.
My advice to those who want to join the modeling industry is that do not hesitate to join and dont be discouraged by your height or even your body as there are various types of models thus, you can be a plus size model, a petite model or a commercial model, to mention but a few.



For the benefit of those not yet familiar with you, can you tell in brief about your self?

Blessing- Blessing Mutizira is my name and I am 21.

what drew you towards the modeling career?

Blessing-What drew me to this industry is the touch of glamour and also my passion for modeling ever since i was young.

When and where did you decide that you were going to be a model?

Blessing-Well I decided to join the industry this year in January under choice cuts modeling agency.

Thus far, how has your journey in the industry been?

Blessing- It has been fun but quite challenging and time consuming since I am also on my industrial attachment, but I have so far been able to manage.

Any peagents?

Blessing-I haven't participated in any peagents yet but with choice cuts, I am sure to participate in the near future.

What are some of the highlights /memorable moments for you in your career thus far?

Blessing- One of the memorable events was the Africa day celebrations at Harare Children 's home where we helped as an agency in the fund raising for the children. Another major highlight would probably be when I got to audition for a commercial advert aa it was something that really boosted my confidence.

Can you share with us some of your goals?


Blessing-So far i have managed to boost my dancing career with the help of jibilika dance group and hopefully will become one of the top models as well.

'Official Welcome to Choice Cuts Modelling agency' ceremony on this Saturday

This Saturday Choice Cuts Modelling agency will be hosting an 'Official Welcome' ceremony for its newly-registered models at the Crown Plaza hotel in the capital city, Harare.
"The event is targeted at the models that have just registered with us and those that are willing to do so, including a few individuals, those that might want to be introduced to Choice Cuts and know more about us", said Datafae, Choice Cuts' representative.

The purpose of the meeting, according to Datafae, was to introduce the newly-registered models to the Choice Cuts administration and also what is expected of them from hereon as members.
"Our main agenda is to do an official welcome for the newly registered Choice Cuts models and at the same time introduce them to the Administration. 
"This meeting will also serve as a platform and opportunity for us to be telling them what they are supposed to do and what they are not supposed to do as well as our obligations pertaining to their work, the roles we are going to play and what we are going to require of them", he said.

With the models having done their part, so-to-speak, and entrusted their careers in the hands of the agency, Saturday's ceremony presents Choice Cuts with the chance to prove to the models and everyone else that their trust has not misplaced.

"We are aiming to reach a point of agreement with our models and letting them know that the decision that they have taken of placing their careers into our hands actually means that they have taken a huge step and with their cooperation we are going to make them into who they want to be", added Datafae.

The Choice Cuts representative however sought to make it clear that the official welcome meeting did not by any means signal that the registration process was done.
"The registration is still in progress, for those that want to be part of us they can still approach us or come to this meeting. 
"As of now, we can safely say that the exercise has been successful because we have registered quite a considerable number and though we havent reached our limit of the models that we need, the number of models that we have now is appropriate for us to start our work", said Datafae.

Looking to the future, Datafae said that after Saturday's meeting was when the real work began and that it was a long road ahead but one that was necessary.
"After Saturday, this is when the actual work begins. By next week the calender of our events will be published and the models will already be on their duties", he said.





Thabile Veronica Nkosi puts Her Beauty and Brains to Work

"I want to be able to show the world that you do not need to be hired for a job to make money but you can be your own boss using what talent or skill that you already possess, in my case, I am making use of my beauty and brains", says the gorgeous Thabile Veronica Nkosi, one of the entrants in the upcoming Miss SA Township peagent.

She is indeed a unique combination of both beauty and brains, that is without a doubt and the model seems to have her sights firmly set on taking the crown back home to her own 'township' of Mpumalanga.

We sat down with the lovely Thabile for a brief chat in which she gave us an insight into her modelling career, her family and most important of all, her hopes and aspirations. Below is how it all went down.





You recently entered the Miss SA township pagent, what preparations have you put in place in order for you to advance in this competition?



Thabile: As a township girl I believe putting the community before myself is an important thing because I am who I am today because of the community and any negativity or positivity that has come my way has built me up to be a better person. I am currently involved in many projects that are to help the community more especially the young girls. In simpler terms, I just want to involve the community in all that I am doing because this pageant in my own understand is about someone who can put the community before herself and be an inspiration to those around her and show them that everything is possible if you put your mind to it.



What do you think your chances of making it to the podium in the Miss SA Township pagent are?



Thabile: Receiving the great news that I was entering into the top 30 finalist as a public choice has really showed me that i had the support of the community and yes, I believe I have every chance of making it to the podium in this pageant!

It is not because of my beauty alone that I say this but also because of the love I have for my township that creates better chances for me. The support from my family and friends and still seeing the likes and shares of my pictures on the Miss SA township page reminds me that the community is behind me 100% and that makes me want to do my best and bring that crown back home with me.



In as far as the modelling, can you share with us some of your earliest memories?



Thabile: As a young girl, while i was still in primary school in fact, I entered into 2 pageants where i was crowed queen (Miss Nhlazatshe Summer). Back then modeling was just done for fun and very few of us understood the concept behind it.



When and where did your journey in the modelling business start?



Thabile: Growing up i was surrounded by people who couldn't understand my walk, I call it the "Natural Model walk" and because of the way I walked, people used to say "ngiyazitjela" (i am full of myself). I just believed in myself and that one day i would be crowned 'miss something' because of that same walk.



What is it that drew you towards pursuing a career in modelling?



Thabile: Finding a job is hard and most of the times people do jobs that they do not really like but because we grew up knowing that we need to work and we need to make money so people will do just about anything to fulfil the two aspects. Growing up with the saying: "Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life" was what really brought me close to modeling. I believe that i will one day be able to pay my own fees and finish my degree (a BA in Public Management and Governance at the University of Johannesburg) and continue doing what I love.



Who were some of your role models growing up and why?



Thabile: My mother has always and will forever be my role model. She was such a calm person, eager to help everyone around her. She was a prayer warrior and everyone around her looked up to her. My father is also my role model because not every man wants to be part of his kids' lives after a mother dies and the fact that he still treats the first born as his own that gives me greater strength to want to be like him and have the love for people like he does. There's four of us, his biological children but he takes care of more than ten and our neighbours as well. He has a heart of GOLD and he is a praying father, I would be nothing without him and for that he is my role model



Besides the Miss SA township pagent, what else have you set your sights on for 2017?



Thabile: I want to finish my degree. I also want to groom other young kids who might want to pursue a modeling career. I want to help the youth create their own jobs with the help of our community council. As an individual I would want to see myself on the runway showcasing designer clothes and making a name for myself and MAYBE you might see me on the Miss SA pageant in future.



Can you share with us some of your aspirations?



Thabile: I want to fight poverty through my modeling career, create projects that will open jobs for people and promote education as it is a very important key to anyone's success.



Any memorable moments/highlights in your career thus far?



Thabile: Getting to meet people during a few video shoots, being part of the Voodoo photography team #LightsCameraAction and having the chance to interact with people via social media as part of my application for Miss SA Township are some of my fondest memories thus far.

'Setting the Pace' with rnb Powerhouse, Cindy

They say there is a golden pot at the end of the rainbow but that has not been scientifically proven hence we will go with the saying that "there is light at the end of the tunnel".



She is one of the most celebrated R'n'B (Rhythm and Blues) female artist in Zimbabwe and when it comes to beauty she is no mean pushover either. If you don't know her that means you have to amplify your knowledge on local music because if you do not, you are surely missing out on quite a lot of good music.



She recently dropped her highly anticipated album M.V.C (Music.Vocals.Cindy) on the 24th of February on ZiFm with the leading single as Setter Pace which has been setting the pace, appearing in the top 5 on the charts of ZiFm, Star and PowerFm, who have actually adopted the song as their station's theme song.



The promotion for Cindy Munyavi's album began in 2016 with the release of four tracks along with their videos namely, Ndidzorero Moyowangu, Parariremoyo, Dai and Tsvaga Mari. Judging by the perfomance of the videos on Youtube, not many can doubt that the album will go a long way in helping Cindy re-establish her dominance on the local scene, the high quality of the songs and videos says it all!

The video clips for Dai(Ndai Ziva) featured as a promotion for Music Television programme, Music Qalabash and that shows that the media appreaciated the craft that came with the videos.



Before the release of the album, the singer/songstress won an AFRIMA (All African Music Award) for Best Female R'n'B artist in Southern Africa, which is a big achievement because looking at the amount of artists in Southern Africa alone, one will be blown away.

Back home, Cindy managed to get herself a Z.I.M.A (Zimbabwe Music Award) nomination.



When the official launch of the album itself arrived, Cindy's multitude of fans were on cloud 9  and posted their purchases on social media (facebook,whatsapp,twitter,instagram etc) to express their joy over the music that had been delivered by the 'queen' herself. Among those was the Maiwe hitmaker, Lamont Chitepo who posted his purchase on Facebook with the caption "...This is the type of Music that makes me proud to be Zimbabwean" and that was living, breathing proof that M.V.C is indeed a good album and as if to reinforce that, Zimbuzz.com and Lounge.com gave a neat review of the album citing it as her best album so far.



"The album is available on all streaming and purchase sites like Spotify, Oyosmusic, iTunes and many more. The double CD album (Blue and Red) is on sale at the Harare Main Post Office and at Cindy's Fashion Corner (Shop 8b at Regal Star Mall along George Silundika 1st and 2rd) and we have already sold 500 copies and counting...",said Cindy Munyavi in response to the question on album sales thus far and where fans can get themselves a copy of the CD.

I know most of you will be giving this sad emoji," 500 copies ( :(  )" but did you bother to check the price?, the album is being sold for $5 and that report she gave was for the POST OFFICE and Cindy's Fashion Corner sales ONLY. When you take into account the online sales through Ecocash, TeleCash, OneWallet and OyOs, those figures meteorically swell upwards.



The album itself has 26songs including the Setter Pace remixes and each song is worth a $1 on OyosMusic, so if you think the album is a flop then calculate 26 by 1 and there are several people who have bought the album on OyOs (and the advantage about OyOs is that it allows you to listen to the song before buying it) in solidarity.



Cindy herself agrees with critics who say that this just might be to her best album to date and as music fans, we are glad that she keeps delivering the goods each time she puts out new music and moreso the fact that and still wants to further develop her music.



Besides the music, Munyavi has established herself as quite the fashion icon on the local entertainment scene.

Her entrepreneurial spirit led her into establishing her own fashion house, Cindy's Fashion Corner, in the central business district and has over the years done considerably well for her.

"The business is doing well and we have added a Make Up parlour, and we charge $10 for men, $20 for women, $20 for bridemaids and $40 for the bride", she said.



Without a doubt, Cindy is definitely 'setting the pace' while everyone can only marvel and try their best to emulate her achievements so far.


Chiyedza, As Bright As The Morning Star

In Shona culture, 'Chiyedza' descibes a light or a thing of beauty (read sunrise), a sight for sore eyes and aspring model, Chiyedza Govha is one such beauty!

Currently signed under Aisha modelling agency, she has participated in peagents such as Miss DDYMC, Miss Kombani lodge and even went on to bag the Miss Valentine Zimbabwe crown.
Her hope is to take home the Miss Universe crown in the not-so-distant future.

According to Chiyedza, her modelling career started a couple of years ago when she was still in high school where she used to engage herself in school pageants.
What started out as just a hobby grew into something much much more as the 18 year old developed quite a liking to "this whole cat walking business".
"Growing up, I was really inspired by models, especially those from overseas. It was then that I came to the realization that i could also showcase to the world my talent through modelling because I really love fashion.
"One day, it is my dream to be part of an international fashion pageant show, that is, if I have not managed to organise one myself of course!", she said.

The bubbly and free-spirited Chiyedza spoke glowingly of her idols, global catwalk queen Naomi Campbell and Zimbabwe's own Brita Musalethulini.
"I look up to the likes of Naomi Campbell, she is an inspiration to all of us aspiring models. You cannot ignore her beauty and the work that she put into making herself into the global icon that she is today, she is a pioneer and role model.
" She has done much in this industry... not only for herself but for women of colour the world over. I love her to bits and it is my hope that I can one day emulate all the wonderful things she has done, sometimes I find myself trying to mirror the way she walks, her confidence and the poise with which she does it with.
"Back home, my idol is Brita Masalethulini, who was of course the inaugural Miss Malaika, she did us all proud!", she said.

Just like her role models, Govha has big dreams of her own!
"I have come to the realization that modelling can open doors for me to market not only myself but my other talents as well and help in establishing me as a fashion icon, business lady and brand ambassador .
"I look at modelling as my passion and one of my goals is to own a modelling agency someday and recruit young girls who have the same passion as i have and make Zimbabwean models recognised world wide", she said.

The Harare-based model is also a budding actress and hopes to one day be a regular feature on both silver screen.
"Besides modelling I also love acting and I believe that if i pursue it with the same passion as my modelling career, one day i will feature in many a film, both locally and abroad", said Chiyedza.

It is no secret that if you have anything worth pursuing in life, you have to dedicate your time, energy and resources towards it. The 18 year old beauty concurred,
"I give my everything to God because I that with Him I can never fail. This year my resolution is to grow and take the next step in my modelling career and that means competing on a national and regional scale.

"More pageants, more hours of grooming and hopefully by the end of the year I would have made plenty of positive steps towards my goals!", said Chichie, as she is affectionately known.

One on One with the vivacious Vanessa Vee Deza

She is touted as one of the most promising Zimbabwean modelling 'exports' and rightly so, she continues raising the nation's flag high down in 'Mzansi'.
It is just as hard not to notice those sultry looks as it is not to notice her work, work that is recognized even back here at home and led being a nominee at the recently held Zimbabwe Models Awards.
Our writer, Peter Tanyanyiwa (PT) sat down with the vivacious South-African based model, Vanessa Vee Deza (VD) and below is how the interview went;

PT. What inspired you to take up modelling as a career?
VD. Well it was a number of people who encouraged me to try modelling, I wasn't too sure about it at first

PT. Take us through the emotions that you went through in your first ever fashion show and/or photo shoot?
VD. My first photo shoot I was super nervous but the photographer put me at ease, my first fashion show I was super confident and it was a success

PT. Who was your role model growing up and how did that help in shaping you into the model that you are today?
VD. Honestly I didn't have a role model in the modelling industry, if anything I never saw myself as a model, It never occurred to me that one day I could actually become a model

PT. Was your family supportive?
VD. My mother was super supportive and is still, but she always advises me to put education first, but to also follow my heart and passion

PT. What are your thoughts on the polarizing 'size 0' recquirement?
VD. Size 0 is an unfair requirement because it puts pressure on so many models, there are bigger models with so much potential but because of their size they are not looked at twice, but I'm glad that the South African modelling industry is now opening up to bigger models, even for runway and even plus size models are in demand, we just hope that this will continue on to Europe so that bigger sized models can be given an opportunity to realize their dreams through modelling

PT. If you were not a model, what else do you think you could have been?
VD. I always wanted to be a lawyer, but was hopeless in mathematics so instead I settled for Human Resources Management which is what I'm currently studying

PT. What are your 'guilty pleasures' food-wise?
VD. Where do I even begin? Let me put it this way, I eat everything and mostly what I'm not supposed to eat, I'm one of the lucky few who don't gain weight

PT. How do you cope with the pressures of being a model?
VD. I cope very well because all I have to do is maintain my weight and take good care of my skin, which at first was a little difficult because I'd forget these things but now it's like part of my life so I just do it easily. I guess the pressure is when I go for castings and have to compete with other models to get a part

PT. What beauty tips do you swear by?
VD. water water water, smooth clear skin all year round, but of course scrub it once or twice a week

PT. Any advice for aspiring models out there?

VD. If one wants to join an agency they need to do thorough research on that agency, make sure it's legit, because there are so many bogus agencies that charge an arm and a leg for joining fee and test shoots but they don't give you any work at all ,not saying that you should always get work, sometimes you can even be in the agency for months but not get anything but other models in that agency should at least be working for you to know that one day you might get work, so it requires a whole lot of patience . Kanye West‘s been talking about collaborating with Drake on a joint project for years.
The two superstars may, or may not, get together for a full album, but there is talk Drizzy could be part of Ye’s upcoming fashion show.
A “Yeezy Season 5” flyer with Drake and Kanye’s name is traveling around the net.
The words “Lost Hills” are also printed four times on the same flyer.
It’s not clear if the image is official, but Kanye has not denied the rumors either.
Could we see a new OVO-G.O.O.D. collaboration too?
“Yeezy Season 5” is going to take place today (February 15) at New York Fashion Week.

Kanye West Unveils New Yeezy Line During New York Fashion Week

Three months after being hospitalized for exhaustion, rapper Kanye West made his first major public appearance on Wednesday, turning up for his Yeezy fashion show during New York Fashion Week. With his wife Kim Kardashian West in the front row next to Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, West debuted the fifth season of his high-end athleisure wear collection for Adidas to the fashion world’s elite. The show, which has become one of the most exclusive presentations during recent fashion weeks, was not live-streamed on the music streaming website TIDAL as some of West’s shows have been in the past. Many social media users expressed their frustrations when they learned they would not be able to watch online, but critics were positive about the 39-year-old singer’s latest runway show, saying the emphasis was on his new collection, rather than him. “To me it felt like the most traditional fashion show that he’s done,” said Rickie De Sole, W Magazine’s fashion market and accessories director, who was at the show. “It had a polish to it. It felt like a serious fashion show. It felt substantial and there was less hoopla. It really was all about the fashion,” De Sole added. The collection was dominated by denim, high-waisted jeans, hoodie sweatshirts, baseball caps, cargo pants, knee-high boots and, of course, sneakers. Muslim model Halima Aden, the 19-year-old Somali-American who competed for Miss Minnesota wearing a burkini and who recently scored a major modeling contract with talent agency IMG, strutted the catwalk wearing a floor-length fur coat and a hijab.
Buzz had been building around the appearance of the so-called “Yeezy Runner” after West was photographed wearing the oversized white sneakers by paparazzi in January.
Kardashian appeared in athleisure wear herself, a sleeveless, see-through turtle neck shirt, track pants and an over-sized winter coat, all of which were maroon.
During the presentation, there were roughly 150 posts per minute about the Yeezy line on Twitter, according to social media analytics firm Zoomph.
The “Jesus Walks” singer emerged as one of Donald Trump’s most high-profile supporters during the 2016 election campaign and met the then president-elect at Trump Tower in New York on Dec. 13, making him the target of outrage and sarcasm from fans on social media.
