We caught up with the Bulawayo born and bred fashion designer and she gave us an insight into her life and the fashion world.
Can you tell us more about who Nomathemba Ndlovu is?
I'm a lady aged 23 and I am the youngest in a family of four. I grew up in Pumula South in Bulawayo and I attended my high school at Premier high school.
What inspired you to take up a career in the fashion business?
The reason i took up a career in fashion designing is because I am very passionate about beauty and I have a creative eye. The industry is exciting, making dull days a rare occurrence and you get the chance to work with all types of clients, fellow designers and it is all quite an experience on its own.
Before i decided to chart my own path in this industry, I already had a background in fashion as i had previously worked at Klober fusion while putting myself through college in 2014 where I was studying marketing management. While at Klober fusion, I felt my life was literally passing me by. I could not take in the thought that I could possibly spend my entire career working for one company so I started designing, sewing and established my own brand from thereon.
Can you still recall what your very first design as a professional designer was?
My first ever design was a long maxi dress, of an African print material.
What is your take on the local fashion industry itself?
The local fashion industry has to put more effort in making nice and unique clothing and being incredibly competitive so as to attract many more customers which will go a long way in making our industry recognizable not just locally but on the international scene as well. With enough support I believe that our industry has the potential to go far.
What have been the highlights for you so far?
keeping up with the rapidly changing trends and satisfying the needs of a demanding audience have been the highlights of my career in the fashion business. With the trends ever-changing, fading in and out, it naturally keeps you on your toes.
As a designer, can you share with us some of your goals?
My goal as a fashion designer is to thrive and make designs that will trend all over the world and to Inspire the young generation of girls.
Any words of advice to aspiring fashion designers out there?
To the fashion designers out there, do what you are good at and everything else will always fall into place. Fashion is life, accept and embrace the fact that you are different, trust me, you will be irreplaceable!
Do you believe in the saying that 'do what you love and you never have to work a day in your life'? Does it apply to you?
I honestly do believe that if you put in more effort and establish a good work ethic when it comes to your dreams, when the fruits of your labor start trickling in none of it will ever feel like a job.
If you put all that you have in what you love then you will love and enjoy working everyday on what you love.
With all the countless designs that you put out, who exactly is your target market?
My designs mainly target young women and Men..
Your aspirations?
I intend to go far as much as I can regardless of any obstacles and by the will of God I have no doubt whatsoever that I will reach those dizzy heights!
