Regardless of the strides that local hiphop has made in the last couple of years, one area of contention still remains ......to a large extend it is the reason why most people continue to shun the genre.
These rapper-wannabes are busy churning out songs that portray fake lifestyles (which they themselves don't and at this rate......might never have)
It is almost as if they are out of touch with their own reality!
This continual disregard for truth and reality is doing more harm than good for local hiphop.
No one brings this point home more than Bulawayo rapper, MC Troy through his latest single titled 'Truth Be Told', a song that tackles this issue head on.
Officially released onto the market on December 5th and produced by K Smash, the single is sure to ruffle a few feathers!
"The song talks about rappers in particular, that are living a lie and busy portraying lifestyles they don't own and will never have.
" Everyday we see and get to hear rappers that speak of 'levels' they have not attained, brag about money that they don't have and end up borrowing stuff like cars, clothes and money just to 'keep up appearances', impress girls and 'stunt' on other artists. What ever happened to being real?", asked the rapper, whose real name is Dennis Matogo.
The 22 years-old went on to say that he himself recognized the need to be able to put out music that is 'real' and is easily relatable to your surroundings and so should his counterparts, because at the end of the day, it was their genre that suffered.
"The biggest casualty in all this is the hiphop genre itself because we are always going to be dismissed as fake. We need to realise that this is not America and we need to establish an identity for our own hiphop.
" It was my love for true and reality hiphop that inspired this song. My hope is that my fellow brothers and sisters will heed my call. This is not a 'diss' track, it is merely an observation that I made and that I believe we can all work together in addressing", said MC Troy, as he is affectionately known to his fans and counterparts.
Having started recording professionally in 2011, the City of Kings (and Queens) rapper has made quite a reputation for himself and is touted as the next big thing and breakout act in the coming years.
Hiphop fans will be familiar with his previous work, the most notable ones being, 'ABANTWANA' (produced by MARVIN and Mastered K Smash), 'Taka Chilla' (Produced by K SMASH), 'Ngeke Bangthande' (Produced by Prince B), 'Keepinh it Real' (Produced by Tazz, 'Zvazvinhu' and 'Blessed' (Produced by Inorra), just to mention a few.
MC Troy also has an 11-track mixtape titled 'The Raw Tape', which is basically a compilation of the singles he recorded between 2014-16.
