Dzimbahwe Hiphop recently partnered with Circus Nite Club to
introduce the Zimbahwe Hiphop Open Mic Sessions, a platform aimed at exposing raw
hiphop talent and will run every single Wednesday.
We spoke to one of the organizers of the event, DaKid Verse who
said that their main goal was to give local hiphop a platform from which, talent
can be exposed and nurtured.
"Recently we started the open mic sessions in
partnership with Circus Night Club. Naturally for us being rappers as well, we
chose hiphop mainly because of the love we have for the genre, however , other
genres are welcome to participate.
"We hope and pray that we will be able to put hiphop on
the map and that we will bring the light and focus on hip hop . Its been a
longtime coming but hiphop is here now", he said.
Dzimbahwe Hip Hop is a media house that seeks to promote
local Hip Hop . Currently they also run an online Hip Hop magazine
(www.dzimbahwehiphop.co.zw) which has been up and running since April 2016 .
"Dzimbahwe Hip Hop was born in January of 2016 and took
its first steps in March and the online magazine went live in April . It is the
brainchild of me (DaKiD Verse ) and my old friend who I have known since High
School, Sage The Grand .
"The two of us are also rappers and I am a journalist
and Sage being a professional web designer, we decided to use our skills to
push hiphop because we both felt that the genre was not getting attention
from the existing media houses", said DaKid Verse.
Though it is still in its infancy, DaKid Verse believes that
the Zimbahwe Hiphop Open Mic sessipns have the potential to go the distance.
"So far the response has been awesome , we are happy and
believe that it can only get better.
"We are only in our second week and already KayGee 40
and KBFMG who both have topped the charts this year have graced the Dzimbahwe
Hip Hop Open Mic Sessions", he said.
As yet another new year beckons, DaKid Verse said that they had
bigger plans in store and that their aim was to grow with each new outing and also
explore other avenues that will go hand in hand and augment other initiatives/efforts
to promote hiphop that they have started.
"The new year is gonna be huge, we have a lot in store
with and with the right partnerships we will take Hip Hop a step further .
"Currently we are hosting the open mic sessions every
Wednesday but the vision is to grow it beyond the open mic session. We are also
in the process of venturing into TV", said the rapper.
Local hiphop has indeed come a long way and it is because of
such initiatives like the Zimbahwe Hiphop Open Mic sessions that the genre is finally
being recognized and taking its deserved place in the limelight.
The genre is and has been on a steady rise locally in these
last couple of years and DaKid Verse agrees,
"In recent years, the hiphop genre has grown beyond a
lot of people's expectations .
"There is more local Hip Hop on radio and this
year has seen more visuals coming from local guys and we are taking over as
proven by the truth that local rappers are now getting air play regionally on
both radio and TV ", he said.
