Ever since l heard about the Bulawayo Arts Awards from the online television channel, Onvi TV's magazine show,The Run Up on their March 2017 edition, l was already engrossed and soaked in enthusiam over the event from the positivep vibes exuded by the artists themselves...... l had no doubt that this was going to be a blessed ceremony.

According to the stats given by the organisers, there were over 400 artists that submitted their works to be critiqued and nominated. The nomination process was not an easy one but they managed to put together the nominees list in time. The nomination announcement ceremony took place in Glen Lodge on the 3rd of June and the entry was free but by the amount of 'glamour' that was present, one could easily have been led to believe that this was the main event. A very big thank you to Mgcini Nyoni for photographing the event, the pictures are amazing!

The voting lines have now closed and for the first time in the history of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, the City of Kings and Queens, the royal ground of Mzilikazi and Lobengula, the origional kingdom of this state will on the 30th of June 2017 at 6pm at City Hall host the first ever metropolitan arts awards ceremony known as the Bulawayo Arts Awards under the theme 'Celebrating Arts Excellence'.

The idea behind the awards dates back the year 2008 and that is according to honourable arts journalist Raisedon Baya.
"...to think we had been postponding this idea since 2008 because we felt we would not get enough support from Bulawayo...", said an excerpt from the post he uploaded on their official page, the ceremony is indeed a dedication to the Bulawayo Arts sector.

According to Sunday News there are almost 40 categories in 8 art sectors namely music, theatre, dance, literature, spoken word, fashion, film, visual arts and media and not only that but there are also awards for schools and corporates that have supported the art sector at large and that is what makes them unique! The Byo Arts Awards are a brainchild of Raisedon Baya, Nkululeko Nkala and Vusa Dube and it is because of them that on the 30th of June at City Hall we will all be shining in front of the red carpet lenses of Onvi TV's cameras and other media houses provided you buy your ticket at Boom City opposite City Hall, tickets cost $5 for general admission,$10 for VIP and $15 for VVIP,get your ticket as soon as possible because they are selling like hot cakes!

The event will be directed by Saimon Mambazo Phiri, the music will be provided by Thembelani Theodore Mdlaziba and the choreography will be done by Ricco Andrews and Richard Ndlovu.

A special thanks to all the corporates who supported the event, l have never seen so many sponsorship tags on a poster either......this just goes to show how important these awards are to the City of Kings and Queens and its community.

I thought that I would touch on one last thing before l conclude and that is the presentation trophy itself. The trophies that the artists are going to be honoured with are well structured and beautiful and from the post on their page they said that the symbol of honour means that, "......from their birth they were stars and in their journey they may continue to unite and not divide themselves in order for them to reach higher goals".

The ceremony will be hosted on the 30th of June 2017 at City Hall at 6pm, tickets are available at Boom City. Come and celebrate what Bulawayo has to offer!
