How did the name Dj Joey Lion come about?
Joey is short for Joseph, Lion is my totem hence Joey Lion
When and where did it all start for you?
I started at high school as I was in entertainment committee and realized I was getting booked for even more functions on holidays
The journey started in high school but intensified after high school as I was now getting club slots and hosting my own functions
Who are some of the people that had an influence and inspired you to take this particular career path?
DJ Khaled has been a great influence to me as just like him I now have my own music label, model agency and events management company as I strive to be independent
We know deejays are in demand everywhere and all the time, can you list for us some of the places that you have deejayed at?
Holiday Inn, cresta lodge, cresta oasis, cut hotel, volt club, multiple churches, corporate events, Chinhoyi University, Orange Groove Motel, Chinhoyi Caves, borrowdale country manner amongst others.
Out of all the places that you have deejayed, which ones were the most memorable and why?
Holiday Inn was memorable as I single handedly hosted the 2015/2016 new year's eve party by myself and had quite the time of my life and so did the revellers themselves!
In a country such as Zimbabwe, can you safely say that the art of deejaying is economically viable?
It is economically viable if you acquire adequate resources as I earn no less than $300 monthly income
Are you yourself solély reliant on deejaying or do you have something else that puts food on the table?
I earn enough money from deejaying and apart from that I do photo shoots for models and host functions at major venues plus I get my models hired for events as well.
What are some of the attributes required for one to be a professional deejay?
You need to keep abreast with current trends and have maximum passion for deejaying plus continuously upgrading your equipment
What are your future goals?
I intend to take over the Zimbabwe entertainment scene abroad as I am now even recognized by the best artists in Africa such as Riky Rick who follows me on twitter and the Kenyan mainstream artists Dreamville whom I have produced a song for them.
Like most of your counterparts, are you also a resident dj somewhere out there?
Currently I freelance as I always look for greener pastures due to my high demand as I capitalize on the internet to secure bookings across all major venues in the country
Is deejaying a passion or just the source of your next paycheck?
Am passionate about the art of deejaying and often groom others who would want help in learning the craft as well.
