KARA

One of the brightest prospects on the local hiphop scene, Female rapper, KARA became Team Legacy's 'First Lady' after signing a recording deal with the label recently.

Team Legacy (TL) is also home to local hip hop stalwarts, Jnr Brown of the 'Tongogara' fame, seasoned rapper MC-Chita, GZE and Bg among others for whom TL acts as an agent for.

Born Mazvita Helen Samushonga in the country's Eastern Highlands city of Mutare, The University of Zimbabwe student said she was not only excited about being TL's "First Lady" but by the journey this new chapter in her music will bring forth.
She however acknowledged the fact that there indeed was a lot more work ahead of her and that she was nevertheless prepared for it and ready to play her part.

"It feels good to be Team Legacy's 'first lady', but its a title i feel i will have to live up to.
At times I feel I need to prove to not only to myself more and more but to everyone else too, prove that I am just as good at what i do as compared to my male counterparts in the industry.

" Fans need to expect a femcee (female emcee) who is able to bring out day to day social situations which affect the youths in today's society because that is exactly who i am", she said.

Being one of the few female artists in this male-dominated industry,  the femcee believes more can still be done to encourage the participation of more female rappers.

"I think the public or society should first learn to accept the existence of female talent in the society without prejudice.
"After that it will naturally happen as females will feel more empowered hence they can take over this industry which has predominantly been a preserve for males ", said the third-year Social Work student.

But how does she manage to balance both her career and education?
To this question the  strikingly beautiful rapper said that it was all about priorities.

"Because i fell in love with music first, school follows second.
I have learnt to prioritise the things important in my life hence i can manage these two well and im proud of that",  said KARA.

KARA says that she started singing whilst she was still in high school and became more invested in music from thereon.

She draws inspiration from the likes of Tupac, Missy Elliot and Mc Lyte, to mention a few.
"I love music.  Its like each time i am on my own its the only thing i think of.

" I love music with a meaning, the type of music that reflects my struggles, my pain, anger and most importantly who i am and also who i aspire to   be in the future",  said the 23-year-old.

As to what category her style of rap falls under,  the femcee said:

"I am a slight Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to my style, so-to-speak, because i can go from trap to hardcore though i am mainly into the hardcore aspect of it.
"I try to fuse my sound with anything and everything that is music", she said.

TL [ team legacy zw ] founded in 2013 by Taona "iampreezo" Matsvai handles artist management as well as event coordination and many people will be familiar with their Street Hiphop Tour, a platform that caters for upcoming talent.
