By tawanda ngena
Rising singer/songwriter, Sharon Siya believes that being able to minister the gospel through her music is not only a gift but a calling from above and one that she will continue to share in the service of Christ, to whom all the glory is due!
Having burst on the scene late last year, Siya is putting the final touches to what is expected to be a spiritually-uplifting debut album.
The beautiful 25 year old, who prefers the term 'Christian artist/gospel minister' rather than 'gospel musician' is quite a refreshing breath of air to an industry that has largely been stagnant over the last couple of years.
Urban Craft caught up with the musician/writer/entrepreneur who not only shared with us details to her forthcoming album but more importantly her spiritual journey, her work in the service the Lord and what being a 'gospel minister' meant, among other things. Below is how our interview with the young, yet inspirational musician went;

What is the title of your album and what inspired the name?
My debut album is entitled My voice, Your instrument. The title was inspired when I received my calling into gospel ministry. The Lord spoke to me about my mission and he commissioned me to walk and talk in the way he commanded me. Therefore as a servant of Christ, I dedicated this album for Gods glory. This is also a reminder of why I am in ministry and who I am doing it for.

What is the official release date for the album?
The release date is 14 April 2017.

How many songs does it contain ......can you give us the titles and what a couple of these songs talk about?
This album contains 8 songs. The titles are VICTORY, JESUS YOU REIGN, JEHOVAH RAAH, TAKE CONTROL, HOLY, NOTHING IS HIDDEN, FREEDOM & a bonus surprise track.
These songs are very personal and spiritual. The album contains songs of reverence, worship, praise and dance. Each song tells a story and carries a message that is connected to a Biblical scripture.

What themes do you explore in this project?
My main theme is REVIVAL. I am ministering about the glory of Jesus and I am empowering all believers and all the people into pressing in and pressing on in faith despite the circumstances surrounding them.

Are there any notable features on the album?
Yes, I am a very unique artist therefore, the features on the album cover will definitely capture a lot of who I am as a person. The cover will also reflect on the messages I am conveying in each song. I am also going to include a small documentary that will connect me more with my followers.

Who produced it?
Your Sound Studios Africa

Are there any videos from the album that the fans can look forward to watching?
Definitely, I will be shooting a couple of videos for this album. I am very excited to share the visuals for my song Victory because it is such an amazing empowering song and it is really going to bring out my inner warrior fighting spirit.
I am also elated to share personal videos for some of my spiritual sentimental songs such asHoly.

Will the album be made available to radio, if so, which stations are you targeting?
Oh yes indeed I would love for the world to hear this album. Locally, I am targeting Star FM and ZiFM Stereo. However, I am not only targeting the local audience but I am also targeting international radio stations as well. Such as Air 1 Radio, Rhythm FM and Metro FM.

Besides the album, what else do you have instore for 2017?
I have a book entitled Behold: The Fresh and the New that will be published this year 2017. This book is a personal testimony of my life and it serves as an eye opener to many. I will be sharing a lot about my life, my journey, my experiences and my transition into becoming a born again Christian.
I would also be venturing into Ladies high fashion business. My vision is Aura, Glamorous and Trendy. This store will sell glamorous dresses, jewellery and shoes for special events, weddings and cocktail and tea parties.
I have also started a brand that creates biblical scripture based Christian Apparels such as t- shirts, hoodies and caps.

Can you list for us some of your studio projects and the years that they were released?
In 2014 I produced a Christian Rap track named Bang Bang, Thy Kingdom
My official first single Praise the Lord was released in October 2016.
In December 2016 I did a collaboration on a worship song named The name of Jesus with a gospel singer named Aussie.

Which song (or songs) do you think that the fans will be more familiar with...?
I think most people would relate to Praise the Lord because it was my first official single and my break into the industry.

For the benefit of those not yet familiar with you or your work, can you give us a detailed background about yourself?
I am a Christian Artist, Composer, Gospel Minister, Writer and Entrepreneur. I am a very energetic, sociable and flamboyant woman. I love preaching and sharing the Gospel, I am a worshipper, speaker, and I love to empower, influence and encourage people. I started my gospel ministry in October 2016 and I am founder of a charity foundation named Heaven's Reflection which mainly provides for the less fortunate. Especially the children.

Where and when did this musical journey of yours start?
I started writing music at the age of 13 in my first year of high school, by the time when I was 17, I had written about a 100 songs. After high school I studied ABRSM music theory and vocals. At the age of 20 I studied Audio Production and it was there where I learnt the technical part of sound and I started creating my own Electronic Music tracks and jingles.

What motivated you into pursuing this career path?
I have always loved music. It was always my dream to become a singer from a very young age. When I received the calling into gospel ministry last year 2016, I was very elated to serve the Lord by means of music evangelism. I chose this path because making gospel music gives a sense of fulfilment and a sense of belonging. It is truly my happy place.

What seperates/differentiates a 'gospel minister' from any other artist/'gospel singer'?
Well, In my opinion, I dont think the titles really matter because we all servants of Jesus Christ spreading the Gospel to the world. However, I call myself a gospel minister because though I am not only a gospel singer, I mainly evangelise through music, I always seek the Lords revelation over everything I do and preach. I seek the Lords direction over the music I write because when I received the calling I was given assignments to fulfill so I minister according to the will and revelation of God. Every song I write and release, has to serve a purpose which is based on Gods will and direction for me. Hence why I named my debut album My Voice, Your Instrument.

What is it that you aim to achieve through music?
My main mission is to share the love of God and to win souls for his kingdom. I also want to impact, empower and influence the believers as well as the non- believers. I would love for the world to experience the sense of love, freedom and perfect peace I feel through Jesus Christ.
