Cde Chinx son follows in father's footsteps
It has become a trend the world over, for the offspring of music legends to throw their hats in the fray as well and not only seek to consolidate on their parent's legacy and brand but also establish their own.
Locally, we have already seen the likes of Tendai Manatsa (son to the great Zex Manatsa) Selma Mtukudzi (daughter to Tuku), Gary Tight (son to Willom) come through the ranks.
Not to be left out is aspiring hip-hop artist Panashe Dean Chingaira, also known as 'Yung Pinhoxxy'. He is of course, the son to one of the most iconic figures in this nation's history, the man we have all come to know and love as 'Cde Chinx'.
The part that his music played during the country's struggle for independence is unquantifiable. His music was there to enlighten, to inspire, to boost morale and keep the sons and daughters of Zimbabwe fighting for emancipation from the York of colonialism.
Fast forward to 3 Decades after independence and his son is about to open his own chapter as well and hopes he can make a mark.
The 18 year old Norton-based hip-hop artist said that he was excited at the prospect of it all.
"This is a moment that I have been waiting almost my entire life for and I can hardly wait to get into the thick of things.
" By the end of October, my first project should be ready for the market and my hope is that it will announce my arrival as well as establish me as a force to reckon with ", he said.
His debut single is simply titled 'Before' and according to the rapper himself, the track talks about "my past, the struggle and hustles that I have faced along the way and overcome".
When your father is a celebrated icon like Cde Chinx, you are hardly ever short of inspiration, Yung Pinhoxxy can attest to this.
" I never had to go very far in search of inspiration. He is the best supporting father ever and my main source if inspiration", he said.
There indeed is a lot that his father has imparted on the young man in the hope of steering him in the right direction.
"I have learnt quite a lot about music and other stuff from him, almost everything that I know about music, I owe it all to him.
"Above all, he told me never to sign a contract/deal that i don't really understand or have full knowledge of and everything else that I needed to know about the music industry. It shows that he really wants to be there for me in every possible way that he can", said the young man.
The question on everyone's lips would be, are we likely to see a father and son collaboration anytime soon?
" Certainly......but probably not before i put my own house in order and that means establishing a name for myself and also putting my team on the map.
" It is obviously an opportunity that any son can look forward to, being able to make music with their own father and i'm no exception", he said.
As to why he chose to peruse a genre totally different from the one that made his father a revered and iconic figure locally, all the young lad had to say was,
"I would like to say that I believe what i inherited from my parents is music and i also believe that it has nothing to do with the genre or style.
" ......and to add to that, I believe in myself and the talent that I have. There is no reason why i should not excel doing hip-hop. I have been in love with hip-hop for as long as I can remember".
Whether he will ever come close to matching his father's iconic status is irrelevant, but one sure thing is that Yung Pinhoxxy is his own man and will fight to prove that to everyone else.
